Korea's Low Birth Rate

This is an issue that seems to be worth mentioned for educators and institutes out here in Korea. If the population continues to shrink that also means the education market is shrinking. So, who do we teach then?

Korea's notoriously low birth rate is making edu companies rethink who to target next. Pre-schoolers? Yes, most definitely. How about younger? If it's possible to teach a baby while it's still in his/her mother's womb, Korean edu companies will figure a way to do so (not joking).

On the flip side, because each family has fewer kids that means that all their resources (money) will go towards raising that kid to be the best and brightest that that kid can be. That means, that for each kid, institutes can charge more and parents won't mind (as much) because they only got one kid. But who can say for sure that'll be the case. We'll just have to wait and see.

All about crowdsourcing, collaboration, and user created content.
McDonald's teamed up with myspace.com to allow users to submit a 30second chant.

Well, there's this one guy who actually robbed a McDonald's when he was 14 years old. He went to jail for 12 years. He submitted a chant and now it's the top 5!!!!!

Shanghai was a great trip! Got to meet some very cool people:

1. Carsten Ullrich

I read about Carsten on a blog called Web2Asia. It was an interview about his foray into e-learning. We had some good food and great conversation about how semantic web applications could potentially revolutionize not just the way we search but the way we learn. Just imagine, you're writing an essay or blog and the things you need to know to make that essay or blog better appears on the margins in the form of related articles, films, music, wikis, etc. That is the future of learning but the question is how long will users have to wait.

Also met his wife, who's doing some innovative stuff with e-learning (think plays, twitter, etc.) Learned a great deal about live streaming and interactive learning.

2. Hank Horkoff

Had some good beer at Kaab in the French Concession called Xian tin ti.
Hank is the CEO of Praxis Language and their service/product Chinespod is gaining a reputation as the language tool to learn Chinese. I've recently tried it out and the podcasts are extremely entertaining. Chinespod has been mentioned in many reputable publications but most notably the NYtimes.

Anyway, in terms of the real meat of our conversation, you guys will have to wait a litte bit.

Last night was our third "class" Actually we had two groups of about 6 people each and the consensus was: It was a blast. People were debating and arguing over the BEEF FTA issue for about 2 hours. The first class was full of "students" while the other was a mix of working professionals from reputable companies.

Many of the participants said that the class exceeded their expectations. Many of the participants (actually all) went out to socialize afterward. Are you kidding me? But the esl lifestyle that CDI is trying to promote is actually a niche market here in Korea that no one has tried to cater to. Who knows, this thing might actually catch on....

Although this isn't a tech blog, every now and then I'd like to review a new website or app. Also, the sites that i review will have some sort of connection to learning in the sense that you can enhance your learning environment whether physical or virtual.

According to techcrunch, better than evite is ANYVITE.

Simple to use. Get an ESL party started.
Invite some people, and start studying or talking in English.

There's group near Yonsei University called Hana International Club. They have two floors of a building and run a cafe by day. People come by, study some English, chat with foreigners, but the thing is they have over 50,000 members on their cyworld page. (side: i hate doing searches here in korea b/c i can never find what i really want to find.)

Hana Club's parties are pretty fun i hear.

Talk 2.0 Live Beta Launch

Yesterday was the first "class". I hate to call it a class because it was more of a discussion. Again, Talk 2.0 Live is the offline venture started by my company that supplements the Talk 2.0 Mobile service. People actually come to a physical venue to discuss relevant issues of the times.

Best part: FREE!!!!!!!!! (while in Beta)

2 people came yesterday where they enjoyed some honest discussion (in English) about the whole FTA Beef issue. The older Korean gentleman worked in the Roh Administration.

It's not i like putting "2.0" on all my titles but "Talk 2.0" is an offline (physical location) service being offered right now by my company, CDI Holdings. BTW, we just went public and the stock's been hot!

Back to "talk 2.0":

Find a gf/bg (okay maybe not, but i'm sure this is as good a reason as the previous 3)

Well, why is talk 2.0 you ask? Because we also have a "debate mate" phone service that allows users to practice their English by discussing hot issues that are relevant to their lives here in Korea.

The website eslifestyle.com is being revamped right now. it'll be up in a month.

Offline activities such as these are vital for any education company even if you want to succeed online. people that meet outside of cyberspace get to truly understand and interact with one another thereby strengthening their relationship(s). That way they'll have more to say and share with one another online.

I see all the time. For example, Hackers is one of the biggest offline and online edu institutes in korea. Their online community is active but that's strengthened by the fact that they meet offline at places like Dunkin Donuts, Coffee Bean, Starbucks, etc. The first floor of my office building has a Dunkin Donuts where these students meet and interact and eventually study. The management had to deal with these study groups staying for hours so they put up a sign saying no more than 3 study groups at a time. Mind you the D&D downstairs is pretty big.

What is edu 2.0?

That's a question that "we" shall try to answer in the next year. How do we define education in this new era where learning (esp. English) goes beyond grammar rules learned in a classroom? Here in Korea, esl (english as a second language) is going through some fundamental and radical changes that will determine the fate of this country as it seeks to gain a foothold and capitalize on the emergence of Asia - economically and otherwise (http://www.worldmapper.org/posters/worldmapper_map164_ver5.pdf)

There is a palpable need for English.

Kids ▶ no English ▶ no good college ▶ no good job ▶ hard life.

Adults ▶ no English ▶ hard to get promotion
(side: more frequent M&As in Korea predicted for this year involving large foreing national companies. How's it gonna feel being stuck in the elevator with your new boss when you can't say two words to him?)

So what's everyone to do? Well, don't worry there's help on the way. In the form of what? How bout this to start....
